The Club Dumas

The Club Dumas - Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Sonia Soto A page-turner set in the seamier part of the book trade. I enjoyed this very much, for both of the threads (a Three Musketeers manuscript that seems somehow to be generating characters from that novel(!), and a bibliographical mystery surrounding a volume purporting to allow the summoning of the devil). The climax was frankly a bit silly, but the book-lore and the vivid characterizations were great fun. There was a curiously conventional romantic aspect to the fact that the only unsolved mystery at the end was the true nature of the young woman the protagonist fell in love with - after all, is the true nature of woman not the ultimate mystery? [rolling eyes here]. I enjoyed Perez-Reverte's Captain Alatriste, but I'm glad I picked this one up as well; it's a bit more sophisticated, I think, and of course, it fell right in with my own personal bibliomania.
