The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass - Philip Pullman My first venture into fantasy for many years, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a cracking good adventure tale with a sympathetic juvenile heroine, lots of well-drawn supporting characters, and a nicely consistent and interestingly drawn parallel world. So here I am, lagging behind popular culture by three years as usual (the movie, which apparently did not do well, to my surprise, came out three summers ago), and I expect that I will eventually read the remaining two volumes in the His Dark Materials trilogy, since the end of this book primes one so well and obviously for the next.
