[These notes were made in 1984:]. A not-terribly-memorable encounter with two super-races, one fairly benign although at first misunderstood (the Arivne) and the other invading and malignant. Haldeman manages to arrange a battle of wills on some metaphorical/imaginative plain between two Irapina (that's the second race) and Kirk and Spock. That conflict is resolved when Spock breaks the rules by ceasing to try, giving his life (on the imaginative plane) for Kirk. But it is all told briefly and drily, and Haldeman, although he makes no characterization blunders, is clearly more interested in his energy-creatures than in the Enterprise crew. It's all right, I guess.
