iron chest

iron chest - George Colman [These notes were made in 1983:]. I read this play for exams. It's a dramatization by George Colman the Younger of William Godwin's Caleb Williams, but differs considerably from the original in tone and emphasis, and in such minor matters as keeping the heroine alive (there is no real heroine in CW). The copy I read was xeroxed from a Drury Lane prompt copy used for 1828 and 1831 performances (the latter apparently with "Mr. Kean"). Very interesting to see what they cut -- nearly all the songs, for instance (there were a great many - almost a musical tragedy).
